??In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary??s greeting, the child leapt in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, ??Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leapt for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.? Luke 1:39-45 ??In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ??Do not be afraid; for see??I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.?? And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, ??Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favours!??? Luke 2:8-14 Advent and the season of Christmas are fast approaching. Once again, we will be gathering to learn more about the events leading up to the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. This year we will come together for soup and sandwiches following worship beginning Sunday, November 24 and continuing until December 15. We will be using Amy-Jill ??AJ? Levine??s , Light of the World: A Beginner??s Guide to Advent as our guide. After all, no matter how old we are or how many times we have hear the Advent stories, aren??t we all just beginners in our faith journey. Levine is University Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies. In this study, AJ brings her knowledge, her storytelling skills, and her love of the Gospels to the story of the birth of Jesus. Looking at four different chapters in Luke and Matthew, she unearths deep connections between the Jewish traditions and the events of Jesus?? birth. She also helps set the cultural (context) stage by drawing out how the Gospels address the political tensions in the early first century. AJ points out the importance of Matthew and Luke as they tell the story, and how the points made in the first two chapters of each Gospel can be heard throughout the remainder of the text. She regards the distinct versions that Matthew and Luke provide not as inconsistencies, but as variations on a theme, for the story of Jesus?? birth cannot and should not be reduced to just one perspective. During our four Sundays together, AJ will guide us through the stories we have come to know so well and hopefully bring a new light to shine on them for us. Beginning in week one with the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth. In the ??The Meaning of Memory? we will examine not only the story of Elizabeth and Zachariah, but several other couples that suffered from infertility. With the ??The Promise of Potential? in week two we will examine Gabriel??s announcement to the virgin engaged to Joseph, and Mary??s appropriate confusion. Because it??s not every day that we have angels speaking to us. Week three finds us looking at ??The Journey to Joy? where we will travel with Mary and Joseph as they make their way to Bethlehem and Jesus?? birth. Finally, for our last week, we look at ??The Gifts of the Gentiles?, where we not only find out how we, as Gentiles, fit into all this but we met the Magi and King Herod as well. As we move through this study, we will see how AJ considers the different characters in the narratives. As well as their place and importance in the story, as she looks to help us understand what these stories would have meant to those who first heard them, as well as what they might mean to us today and to faith communities near and far. I look forward to finding new meaning the old stories that we know. I hope that you will join me. Peace and Blessings, Pastor Dennis Advent Study Sundays, November 24 thru Sunday, December15 following Morning Worship (note the different date and time) Light of the World: A Beginners Guide to Advent In Light of the World: A Beginner??s Guide to Advent, author, professor, and biblical scholar Amy-Jill Levine explores the biblical texts surrounding the story of the birth of Jesus.
